What is stainless steel?

In the year 1913 an English metallurgist Harry Brearly, while working on the performance improvement project of rifle barrels, discovered by accident, while adding chromium to the low-carbonated steel, that it becomes resistant to damages and rust.

Modern stainless steel can, together with added carbon and chromium, also contain nickel, molybdenum and titanium.

Nickel, molybdenum and chromium increase stainless steel's resistance to rust. It is understood that at least 12% of chromium should be added to steel, in order for it to become rust proof. In steel, chromium amalgamates with oxygen from the atmosphere, forming a thin, invisible layer called “passive film”.

The atom sizes of chromium and oxygen are very similar, therefore they harmoniously stick to each other on the metal surface, forming a stable layer which is only several atoms thick.

In case the metal surface is scraped or the protective layer is damaged in any other way, more oxygen will gather on that spot, forming and recovering the exposed surface, protecting it from further corrosion.

One should have in mind the fact that stainless steel has a poor resistance to rust in the surroundings, i.e. environment with low or no circulation of oxygen.
